“In my mind, brandings are the epitome of the ranching lifestyle and ethic. Neighbors come to help. Animals are central, whether it be the calves that are destined for a bad day, or the horses so vital to getting the job done. The tasks are not gender-specific; women rope, castrate, brand or vaccinate alongside the men. The work is intense, with a lot happening at once, and hopefully there will be no wrecks. When the job is done, there’s the cold beer, a good meal and a lot of camaraderie. What I aim for in my drawings is to capture a still moment in what is otherwise a frenetic ballet of humans, animals and dust."
